Ah James!

I've been reading the Book of James for the past couple of weeks and in the first two chapters, James used a particular phrase twice.  Now we all know that when the Bible repeats something, it is really important.  Here are the two verses that repeat the phrase:

[Jas 1:25 ESV] 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

[Jas 2:12 ESV] 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty.

The common phrase is "the law of liberty."  But what does it mean?  I mean we can kind of infer that it is a good thing, but what specifically?  Off to the commentaries!

John Gill's commentary was most helpful.  He said the law of liberty is the Gospel and the Truth that makes us free so that we are no longer in bondage to sin.  We are responsible for our thoughts and actions as we will face future judgment but that judgment will be under the grace found in the Gospel of Christ.

The ESV study bible says it refers to when the law of liberty comes along with the Gospel and the Holy Spirit's ability to change hearts.  The law isn't an outward show of adhering to the rules but because of the love we have for Christ, we have the joyful privilege of serving Him.

The Life Application study bible says that as believers, after salvation we are free to obey God.

As I get further along in my walk with God, the more clear that it becomes that living a life under Him and His Word is no burden as some would have you believe but a rock you can cling to as you build a fulfilling and joyful life.
