Not my idol . . .

I was preparing to write a very smug and judgy post about the Superbowl and how it hurts my heart to see millions "bow down" to this thing of professional sports.  I don't get it.  I have no interest in tailgating, crowds, noise, three hours of two teams of multi-millionaires bashing in to each other, endless commercials trying to sell me products and ideas that I would never, ever buy.  I mean, you want to feel weird and out of step in this country, try to ignore to what amounts to a national holiday in the United States.

Exodus 20, The 1st commandment [Exo 20:3 KJV] 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.  Because when you do that is idolatry.  Idolatry is defined as:

IDOL'ATRY, n. [L. idololatria. Gr. idol, and to worship or serve.]

1. The worship of idols, images, or any thing made by hands, or which is not God.
Idolatry is of two kinds; the worship of images, statues, pictures, &c. made by hands; and the worship of the heavenly bodies, the sun, moon and stars, or of demons, angels, men and animals.
2. Excessive attachment or veneration for any thing, or that which borders on adoration.

Definition 1, no problem.  Got it covered.  Won't have a thing to do with worshiping anything of the kind.  Definition 2, well . . .  This is were I was going to nail all the professional sport fans.  But God . . . quietly said what about your idols?  You spend all this time with media, internet and television, then you do with me.  I argued I'm learning more about you God, listening to music praising you, reading articles to increase my knowledge about you, memes with pithy and lofty quotes about you.  Oh, now I see.  I need to spend more time with you in prayer and reading your word.  Not in the slick, polished and high tech way which is an idol way. But in the simple and quiet relationship way.

God, what about these silly sports fans?  Speck and log, daughter.  Speck and log.
