Word Study Wednesday

This month we will take a look at the word "redeemed."

Webster's 1828 dictionary defines it as:   Ransomed; delivered from bondage, distress, penalty, liability, or from the possession of another, by paying an equivalent.

In the Old Testament:  Strong's definition is פָּדָה pâdâh, paw-daw'; a primitive root; to sever, i.e. ransom; generally to release, preserve:—× at all, deliver, × by any means, ransom, (that are to be, let be) redeem(-ed), rescue, × surely.

This word is translated as follows:   redeem (48x), deliver (5x), ransom (2x), rescued (1x), miscellaneous (3x).

In the New Testament, three different words are used:

1)Strong's definition is λύτρωσις lýtrōsis, loo'-tro-sis; from G3084; a ransoming (figuratively):—+redeemed, redemption.

This word is translated as follows:   redemption (2x), redeem (with G4160) (1x).

2)  ἐξαγοράζω exagorázō, ex-ag-or-ad'-zo; from G1537 and G59; to buy up, i.e. ransom; figuratively, to rescue from loss (improve opportunity):—redeem.

This word is translated as follows:  redeem (4x).

3)  λυτρόω lytróō, loo-tro'-o; from G3083; to ransom (literally or figuratively):—redeem.

This word is translated as follows:   redeem (3x).

So we have been redeemed, delivered, ransomed, rescued.  Praise Him!
