Word Study Wednesday

Last week, we began a word study of the phrase "I am" by God; to see who God says he is.  We covered the first 26 chapters of Genesis.  You can read that lesson here.  Today we finish up the "I am" statements of God in Genesis.

13 And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, "I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. ... 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." [Gen 28:13, 15 ESV]

13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me. Now arise, go out from this land and return to the land of your kindred.'" [Gen 31:13 ESV]

11 And God said to him, "I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body. [Gen 35:11 ESV]

3 Then he said, "I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. [Gen 46:3 ESV]

God knows our family.  He knows how He has interacted with our ancestors and how He will act in our descendants lives.  He sees our lives in an instant because of His all seeing ways (omniscience).  He keeps His promises/covenants to us.

He knows His history and ours.

Once again He is El Shaddai who assigns us tasks.  He gave Jacob the task to be fruitful and multiply and that is what Jacob did.  When his family went to Egypt, they numbered 70. (Genesis 46:27)
