Word Study Wednesday

6 And he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. ... 14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And he said, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" 15 God also said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. [Exo 3:6, 14-15 ESV]

2 God spoke to Moses and said to him, "I am the LORD. ... 6 Say therefore to the people of Israel, 'I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the LORD.'" ... 29 the LORD said to Moses, "I am the LORD; tell Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you." [Exo 6:2, 6-8, 29 ESV]

God reveals quite a bit about himself in Chapters 3 and 6 in Exodus.

God reveals to Moses that He is the same God that made covenants with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  Moses was overwhelmed which I think any of us would be.  A burning bush that is not consumed and the voice of God is not in a typical day.

God gives Moses a mission:  to rescue His people from Egypt.  No biggie, right?  But he worries that the people of Israel won't believe him.  God says to tell them "I AM" has sent me.  It is His forever name.

In Chapter 6, God tells Moses His plans:
  • He will bring them out
  • He will deliver them
  • He will redeem them
  • He will take them as His people
  • He will be their God
  • He will be in a relationship with them so they "know" Him
  • He will give them a homeland that He promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob several hundred years before
These things are the same things He does for us when He grants us salvation.  Hasn't He:
  • brought us out of the world into His kingdom
  • delivered us from a life of sin
  • redeemed us so that we are no longer slaves to sin
  • He calls us His children
  • He is our God
  • He is our Father, an intimate relationship that allows us to know Him
  • One day He will send Jesus again to collect us and take us to that place that He has been preparing since Jesus' ascension
