Word Study Wednesday

5 The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them." ... 17 Thus says the LORD, "By this you shall know that I am the LORD: behold, with the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water that is in the Nile, and it shall turn into blood. [Exo 7:5, 17 ESV]

This is not the warm and fuzzy side of God the Father.  This is the Almighty handing down attention getting judgments.  Each plague in Egypt targeted a specific Egyptian god.  This one targeted the Nile river god - Hapi.  Read more here.


22 But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people dwell, so that no swarms of flies shall be there, that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth. [Exo 8:22 ESV]

From this point on, God separates His people from the punishments He is inflicting on the Egyptians.  The Egyptian god targeted in this plague is Kephri.  Read more here.


2 and that you may tell in the hearing of your son and of your grandson how I have dealt harshly with the Egyptians and what signs I have done among them, that you may know that I am the LORD." [Exo 10:2 ESV]

This statement occurs around the 8th plague of locusts which targets the Egyptian god, Seth.  Read more here.


12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. [Exo 12:12 ESV]

The most terrible of the plagues, death of the firstborn targeting the Egyptian ruler himself, Pharaoh.  Read more here.
