Word Study Wednesday

"I am" through the rest of Exodus:

9 And the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I am coming to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever." When Moses told the words of the people to the LORD, [Exo 19:9 ESV]

God takes form as a cloud, that His people can see Him visually and they also have the privilege of hearing Him audibly as He speaks with Moses.  He helps His people to believe that He is with them.

2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. [Exo 20:2 ESV]

He says this often, but you know what?  We need the constant reminder of every thing He has done for us because we have short attention spans and even shorter memories of the blessings.  We seem to have no problem remembering the bad stuff that has happened to us.

27 for that is his only covering, and it is his cloak for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate. [Exo 22:27 ESV]

God cares.  His compassion is something His people would do well to emulate.

46 And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God. [Exo 29:46 ESV]

He is not a far-off or distant God.  He wants to be His people's "hands on" God.  He wants to dwell with us.  I don't understand why but I am glad that He wants to.

10 And he said, "Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the LORD, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you. [Exo 34:10 ESV]

God is so awesome with covenants.  He is the only one who is completely reliable in keeping His word.  He knows His plans for His people as a group and individually to show the world His awesome glory.

I hope you've enjoyed reading about some of the "I am" statements in the first couple of books of the Bible.  I hope to do a series later on of some of the "I am" statements in the New Testament.
