Inspiring Example

of Dorcas a/k/a Tabitha.  Her names mean "female gazelle."

[Act 9:36 KJV] 36 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.

In this verse we see that she is a follower of Jesus.  She is full of compassion for the less fortunate.

She became sick and died.  The disciples appealed to Peter who was in a nearby village to come.

[Act 9:39 KJV] 39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

Her friends showed Peter her handiwork of coats and garments.  To show him something about her heart of service and devotion to her Lord.

[Act 9:40-41 KJV] 40 But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning [him] to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. 41 And he gave her [his] hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.

God, working through Peter, breathed life back into Dorcas.  Like a gazelle, she rose up and was presented to her community as alive.  She who was dead, who was mourned was now alive again.  The object lesson of her life, her quiet, service centered life became a testimony that helped others to believe in the Lord.
