[Luk 22:47-48 ESV] 47 While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"
Why? What caused him to choose his course of action? He had spent time with the Lord. I'm sure he considered himself a follower. But what happens in someone's mind that justifies betrayal? Unmet expectations? Because Jesus wasn't going to take a place as earthly king overthrowing Roman rule and Judas by association would have a place of privilege? Was he someone who just never understood the message? We all know people who have been attending church a long time but the message has not changed them. Was he someone who earthly success meant more to him than eternal life? Short-sighted to be sure. Many people believe that once this earthly life is over, that's it; there is nothing more. Lack of self-examination? Many people go through life not once giving a thought to their actions and attitudes.
I think of two things that make Judas an example not to follow. 1) He was used by Satan to destroy. To be used by Satan though, we give consent.
[Jhn 13:2 ESV] 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him,
Two, only by God's grace that it wasn't you or me or someone else. Scripture says:
[Rom 9:17-18 ESV] 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth." 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.
Now I'm not sure I understand all the deep theological consequences of this particular scripture but I don't need to. God possesses all knowledge and can judge fairly the motives of human hearts. He knows who His sheep are and who the wolves are, who is for Him and who is against Him. He does His part, and I do my part in knowing Him, loving Him, respecting Him and following Him.
