One of my beliefs is in the miracle that God preserved His Word down through the ages and inspired men who followed Him to assemble the Holy Bible. The Scriptures are our instructions for living no matter what age, society or culture that we live in. One of God's attributes is his immutability, or in other words He doesn't change and neither do His Words. There are not many interpretations because that could lead to the twisting of His Word to suit a situation.
I don't know what is going on with this story. But if this was said, then I am sorry that the truth of God's Word has been compromised by a figure that millions look to for spiritual authority. When we change God's Word so as to not appear as unfeeling and hateful persons, we are basically delivering others straight to the gates of hell by fostering their unbelief in that God only wants them to be happy. Someone once told me that God cares more for your holiness than your happiness. I didn't understand this at the time, but I do now. I can only be happy knowing that I'm living according to God's standards in my own personal behavior. I do not judge other people's journey as I do not want others to judge my journey.
