[Ecc 6:12 KJV] 12 For who knoweth what [is] good for man in [this] life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
I can't help but think though that a life spent bringing glory to God and pointing others to Him is not in vain.
[Ecc 7:1-6 KJV] 1 A good name [is] better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
Your name and reputation in this life is precious. Death, if you are a believer, is precious because it means never being separated from Christ from that point on.
2 [It is] better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that [is] the end of all men; and the living will lay [it] to his heart.
Working for a church, I've witnessed many funerals. You see firsthand all the lives that one person touches and what lessons can be learned such as how life is precious and you shouldn't waste any time with unworthy distractions.
3 Sorrow [is] better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
Sorrow brings reflection and the motivation for lasting change. Laughter, while fun in the moment, just doesn't last.
4 The heart of the wise [is] in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools [is] in the house of mirth.
The wise realize life has serious moments but there are those who just want to have fun...all the time.
5 [It is] better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
A rebuke teaches you something valuable. Songs of fools just lower your IQ.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so [is] the laughter of the fool: this also [is] vanity.
Just having fun all the time will not create works that follow you into eternity.
