[1Sa 15:22-23 ESV] 22 And Samuel said, "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you . . ."
- obedience is more important than sacrifice
- lack of obedience is rebellion and is as bad as divination which the Lord considered an abomination (Deut. 18)
- presuming to speak for the Lord and to know what He "really" means instead of what He says is sin, plain and simple. It is also idolatry, creating a god of your own image instead of following the true God and what He says.
- when we don't obey Him, we are rejecting the Word
