Holiness 101

[Eph 4:22-24 ESV] 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

What does true righteousness and holiness look like?  Well the verses following the above tell us:

  • putting away falsehood which I take to mean live in truth
  • if you are angry that is not sin, but if in your again you sin, that is not good
  • give no opportunity to the devil which means do not give him an entrance into your life.  Throw yourself on the mercy and protection of the Lord
  • if you formerly did wrong things, use all of your efforts to only do good things
  • no corrupting talk.  Just like moms everywhere say, "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." or as Jane Austen said in Sense and Sensibility, ". . . if you can not think of anything appropriate to say, you will restrict your remarks to the weather . . ."
  • no grieving the Holy Spirit
  • let go of all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, slander and malice.  All these non virtues are big downers anyways
Instead,

[Eph 4:32 ESV] 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

This is a good start to holiness. 😁
